02 - Saw VII

Also Known As: Saw: The Final Chapter / Saw 3D

Synopsis: Bobby Dagen has released a book and is making a media tour proclaiming his life changed following his survival of one of Jigsaw’s “games;” the only problem is he’s a liar and about to find out if he really has what it takes to survive. Meanwhile Jigsaw’s wife, Jill Tuck, goes to the police to incriminate Detective Mark Hoffman in exchange for immunity.

Year/Country: 2010, USA

Subgenres: Gore, Torture

Reason for watching/first impressions: I always think I’ll like the Saw movies more than I do. Available on Netflix streaming.

Highlights: Cary Elwes is back! 25 gallons of fake blood.

Lowlights: Though I can’t remember most of the Saw movies, I did enjoy the first few. This one, however, is out of control. Any sort of adherence to Jigsaw’s moral code went out the window. Much of the gore felt forced and specifically meant for the 3D. Also, maybe this is because it’s been so long since seeing the other films, but I didn’t really care about Jill or Hoffman and found that whole storyline annoying.

Most Intense Trap/Game: The teeth pulling - would there really be that much blood? Also the skinhead/car trap was pretty gruesome.

Rewatchabilty: Only if feeling masochistic enough to watch all 7 Saw movies marathon style.

Overall review: The first Saw movie was a good, albeit gory, horror film. This movie was mostly a chaotic mess. It’s too formulaic. I’m glad they finally ended it.
