Synopsis: Brothers Danny and Brian, Brian’s girlfirend Bobby, and their new companion Kate head to the brothers’ childhood vacation getaway in an attempt to hide out while a pandemic destroys the world as they know it.
Year/Country: 2009, USA
Subgenres: Pandemic, Post/Apocalyptic
Reason for watching: Netflix was mostly down and it was one of the few films available for streaming. Also, I love pandemic and end of the world type movies.
Highlights: The brothers’ relationship. Chris Meloni was, as always, excellent - my heart broke for him and his daughter.
Lowlights: The movie seemed short, it could’ve used the extra time to more fully develop the story.
Rewatchabilty: Medium. Though I’m afraid it’ll lose some of its charm upon a 2nd watching, I fear that it’s only a surface deep movie.
Overall review: Though Netflix listed it as a horror film, I found it to be more thriller, science fiction, or even drama. Nevertheless, it’s a must see for anyone who’s interested in apocalyptic dramas and not purely wed to the zombie genre. It was extra enjoyable for me as the filming was done in Albuquerque adding an extra layer of creepyness to the abandoned “Farmington.” With that said it didn’t match the level of films like Children of Men or The Road.
