06 - Survival of the Dead

Synopsis: On an island off the coast of the mainland US, the inhabitants are divided on how to deal with the zombie crisis - one group headed by Patrick O’Flynn wants to kill them all while another group headed by Seamus Muldoon wants to keep their loved ones chained up and “alive.” A rouge group of former military soldiers along with a teenage boy get mixed up in this family-based feud.

Year/Country: 2009, USA/Canada

Subgenres: Zombie, Post/Apocalyptic

Reason for watching: Directed by George A. Romero. Streaming on Netflix.

Highlights: The zombies - loved the ghosting of what they did in life.

Lowlights: The accents are just inconsistent, confusing, and out of place. The characters. The plot. Basically everything except the zombies.

Rewatchabilty: I have no interest in watching this again.

Overall review: I read a review on Netflix (wish I could direct link, but it’s on the first page on the page linked above) which called George Romero the “George Lucas of Horror” and I couldn’t agree more. I loved Romero’s original trilogy and even the remakes of those films. But Survival of the Dead has proven to be worse than his last films, Diary of the Dead and Land of the Dead, which, while not as good as his original trilogy were still somewhat inventive. The plot and the characters are boring. Even most of the zombie attacks and fighting seemed unimaginative. Unless you’re a Romero fanboy, skip it.
