21 - The Absent

Synopsis: Oscar’s parents try to kill him so he kills them first. Years later when Oscar is released from jail, he tries to protect his brother Vincent by killing anyone who could reveal his secrets.

Year/Country: 2011, USA

Subgenres: slasher, twist ending, psycho

Reason for watching: Description sounded interesting

Highlights: The first 20-30 minutes were really interesting - I thought this was the most interesting part of the movie. This is the premise that sounded good to me. The rest of the movie just got ridiculous.

Lowlights: I don’t understand how the brother who kills in self defense (at least the first time) is worse than the brother who is sleeping with his jailbait student. The whole last 2/3rds of the movie are super muddled, riddled with cliches, and predictable.

Rewatchabilty: No

Overall review: Not a good movie. It’s really predictable, in fact I read a story with the same “twist” that annoyed me for being predictable in that same way right before I watched the movie. There is some sex, violence, and hillbillies for those who are into that sort of thing. Overall though, skip it.
